On April 7, 2026, I had the opportunity to participate in a workforce readiness panel hosted by SCHA partners 315 Strategies and A Wider Circle, called “Dress for Success” as part of a violence interrupter initiative supporting individuals reentering the workforce in Washington, D.C. The panel focused on helping younger job seekers—many of whom may be justice impacted—better understand what employers expect during the hiring process and what it takes to succeed and grow once they are employed. 

I was honored to speak alongside an incredible group of panelists, including Wendy Joachim, Senior HR Business Partner at FMP, LLC; Felipe Cofino, HR Consultant and former Hyatt executive; and Karen Estereque Jones, Director of People and Operations at Hands On DC. Together, we had an honest and practical conversation about workplace expectations, professionalism, communication, onboarding, retention, career growth, and the real-life do’s and don’ts of finding and keeping employment. 

Throughout the discussion, participants asked thoughtful questions and shared personal experiences related to barriers they face when seeking employment, including bias, discrimination, lack of opportunity, and challenges rebuilding confidence while reentering the workforce. Lisa emphasized that participants wanted the “raw truth” from employers and HR professionals about what employers are truly looking for and how candidates can position themselves for success. 

One of the most impactful parts of the conversation was discussing practical workplace skills, such as professional communication, handling challenges responsibly, following up after interviews, asking for help early, and understanding workplace boundaries and expectations during the first 30, 60, and 90 days on the job. 

It was also great connecting with the other panelists, and I will be following up with them to talk more about SCHA and how they can get involved.  I was equally grateful to connect with several of the job seekers in attendance and share information about SCHA and the resources available through our network.
